1 A fee charged by a funeral home to cover overhead costs such as rent, interest payments, heating and cooling, supplies, maintenance, etc.

2 Typically, these costs will provide for viewing for at least 4 hours.
3 Cremation of the body of the deceased without any preparation of the body, such as embalming, or formal viewing of the body in a casket by a funeral home. The consumer should not be charged a NDF if there is direct cremation, but check with the funeral home to confirm this. You may want to go elsewhere if the funeral home wants to charge you a NDF when direct cremation is chosen.

* Indicates that the funeral home does not operate a crematory, so the body must be moved to another facility for the actual cremation. This typically might add $300 to the final bill.

PLEASE NOTE:
Information in the table was collected in the Fall of 2007 and is based upon the General Price Lists provided by the funeral homes listed. Although the information was collected and is reported in good faith, Funeral Consumers Alliance of Central Ohio (FCACO) does not warrant the accuracy of the information. General Price Lists are difficult to interpret and subject to change. Consumers, well in advance of needing funeral services, should decide what services they want, begin discussing arrangements with funeral directors, compare the prices, services, and products offered by different funeral homes, and advise their family members of the arrangements they want the family to make. Consumers should note that the table does not include the costs of several other services and products that a funeral home may offer to the consumer, e.g., caskets (prices can vary from about $150.00 to $40,000); transporting the body of the deceased from one funeral home to another; flowers; chapel use; cemetery lots and opening and closing of the grave; etc.
This information was compiled by the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Central Ohio (FCACO). Questions about the survey may be directed to: PO Box 14835, Columbus, OH 43214. Telephone 614-263-4632. In general, FCACO along with the AARP, discourages the pre-payment of funeral arrangements, except in certain specific situations. It is definitely wise to pre-plan, however, and to write down any and all questions prior to making those plans. You may be able to save your estate considerable money if you take the time to do this planning.
